After an extensive and comprehensive national volunteer appointment process, we are pleased to announce that Mat Spencer has accepted the role of County Commissioner for Solihull Scout County effective from 15 April 2022.
I, Dan Potter, would like to personally thank Shirley Brookes for over 6 years of service to Solihull Scouts as County Commissioner, as well as acting District Commissioner – Blythe District in recent years too. I would like to wish her well with her forthcoming move to Hampshire where I have no doubt that she will step into a new Scouting role.
Shirley has been instrumental in supporting the County through the #Skills4Life journey both helping shape the Scout Association’s 2018 – 2025 future in the early years of her appointment, and more recently delivering the strategy and leading the various Solihull Scouts COVID-19 pandemic responses over the last 2 years – ably assisted and supported by the County and District Teams.
Thank you, Shirley, for your passionate support to Scouting in the County and developing young people’s opportunities so enthusiastically, initiating and developing new provision, but also supporting a wide range of life skills for all.
Shirley is already in discussion with Mat regarding handover and continuing support over the next month which again I would like to thank her for.
Mat is already known to a large portion of the County and he looks forward to rebuilding those connections after so much time apart.. He is eager to meet with Solihull’s young people as well as leaders and supporters will be spending the next few weeks meeting both County, District and Group members at various up-coming events.
In accepting the County Commissioner role, Mat commented:
“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to support and lead Scouting over the next few years. Having been a young member in Solihull since Beaver Scouts, my whole heart is behind this appointment and I am looking forward to making sure our young people have as many experiences and opportunities in the years to come, as I have over my time in Scouting so far.
My thanks go to Shirley, her work over the course of her appointment has no doubt seen the world of change but her continued support and strong leadership is a true inspiration and something I will always look up to.
I really hope that this Summer will be one that means we can all get back out on camps and adventurous activities which we have all clearly missed over what has been a tough couple of years and I will be right by your side every step of the way”.
In talking to Mat, he’s really excited about the next couple of years for Solihull Scouting … but equally is aware of the challenge to come.
When initial visits are complete in a few months, Mat will confirm the County team, and the intention is to hold various discussions and consultations as widely as possible and to take as many views and suggestions into account for the future chapter of the Solihull Scout County.
Please join me in congratulating Mat, and thanking Shirley for her service, as I am sure we all wish both Mat and Shirley well in their new Scouting chapters and will give them our generous support through this initial transition.
Yours in Scouting,
Regional Commissioner – West Midlands
