Back in 1912, a Mr Wyatt who was a teacher at St James School founded a Scout Troop in Shirley but the troop folded when he left the district. In 1918 Mr J Benson then Headmaster at St James School restarted the troop which was eventually registered as First Shirley Scout Group on 1st January 1919. Since that date, the group has worked with a vast number of young people and helped shape their lives. As the Group was reformed in 1918 they have decided that 2018 is the 100th birthday of the Group and are now looking at how they can celebrate this historic event and need as much help as possible.
What they’re after is anyone with any memories of their time at 1st Shirley as a uniformed member, leader or supporter. They’d be happy to receive any memorabilia, written reports or just to meet up for a chat to discuss old times. They’re planning a few events during the year which they’d be delighted to invite you to, just drop an email to email@example.com, leave a message on 08432891354 (ringing this number will incur extra charges, please check with OfCom or your service provider for details) or follow them at www.1stshirley.org.uk or http://www.facebook.com/FirstShirleyScouts.
This is the oldest photograph currently know of the Group, perhaps you know better, it’s from a photograph in ‘SHIRLEY A Pictorial History’ by Sue Bates which can be found in Solihull Library
Here’s to the next 100 years!
